College and Club Ultimate

The differences between college and club ultimate are:

  1. Club ultimate is a collection of the really good college (or high school) players. So the level of play in club is higher. That's obvious.
  2. More importantly, though, its very likely in club ultimate that each player has captained/started/led a previous team. Not only do they have ultimate skills (throwing, cutting) but they also have experience managing a team, crafting offenses, etc. Its a high-potential environment cause people have so much knowledge, but that potential can turn to chaos when too many people try to exert themselves.
  3. Club ultimate can be much more independent than college - just cause not all 20-25 guys necessarily live/study in the same area as each other. This is a challenge for those who are driven to work harder around others. Combat it by meeting up with a small group for track, throwing, jumping training.

Similarities include:

  1. Elite level of play is very insular. This season for example Chain will only play a few teams that aren't nationally-competitive (Turbodog-B). Oregon would do the same in the college arena.
  2. Intense and fun is the name of the game for competitive teams. They're focused on ultimate at practice and at tournaments, but fun isn't compromised.
