A Long Time Ago

When I was about 14 or 15, my cousin, Mary, asked me what music I listen to that can always put me in a good mood. I said I didn't have a song or album that does that, really. And she told me that was probably because I was listening to the wrong music.

Props to her for keeping it real. But I felt like she was always hatin' on rap, so I didn't really accept her advice. Ten years later, I'm thinking about music and what kind of power the 'right' music might have for my mood.

I popped in this awfully jolly, but slightly dark, Amelie soundtrack. I got it as a gift. And I like the rhythm, accordion, all that jazz.

And I'm thinking, this is really nice. It reminds me of when I first heard it, riding up the 5 through majestic Shasta Lake area and across fields with amber waves of grain. Classical music, and the off-shoot that French music represents, can sometimes control moods better than any other kind of tune. And I liked the movie, so naturally I like the Amelie tunes.

But I'm not sure its really going to give me the spunk I need to make today a bright one, emotionally. Perhaps you guys have suggestions (other than 'zoom-a-zoom-zoom and a-boom-boom').

About the mood: don't get me wrong, I'm not all blue in the face, heart, and spirit. But, I am 1)still recovering from the end of the season, 2)getting into the beginning of a hard period at work, and experiencing some ongoing worry about life, love, and the pursuit of knowledge.

I immediately thought of this soundtrack about 1/4 of the way through your post and scrolled down quickly and blamo! there it was.

Track 3, Showtime, is almost a genuine pump up song and it is 90%accordian. Who knew!

happy?

They Might Be Giants -- Birdhouse in your Soul

Traveling Wilburys -- End of the Line

Allman Brothers -- Jessica

Esquivel -- this guy is amazing (not a song, just a statement); i think his music is self-described as "space-age bachelor pad music"

Maroon 5 - Sunday Morning (i dont like to admit it, but you kinda have to smile)

classical?

vivaldi makes me happy

hip-hop-anonymous?

Tribe Called Quest often makes me happy, try (I think its called) Pop on beats rhymes and life.

De La makes me smile and dance, 3 feet high and rising especially.

that's an interesting question-- after thinking about that for a bit i realized i don't have anything like that... but i don't want it either. i listen to music that fits my mood, not that changes it.

That being said:

(to add to beef supreme) De La Soul: Bitties in the BK Lounge always makes me laugh

Sublime: What I Got is great feel good song

Manu Chao: Most songs off of Proxima Estacion Esperanza are sweet for good moods
